Luh Ayu - Before (left) and after (right) operation
New Year, New House, New Smile...
2009 Already! Yayasan Senyum Bali is now in our fourth year of assisting our patients.
This is first edition of our Update for 2009 and it will cover Jan 2009 and the last few months of 2008.
Well! Yayasan Senyum Bali staff are smiling as we have now moved into a bigger and more comfortable Smile House at Jl Satelit, Denpasar, just round the corner from our old house which was our home for two years.
November 2008 saw another visit of Professor David David from the Australian Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide and another busy clinic was held on 9th November, identifying many craniofacial patients in need of further operations.

Thank you BIMC Hospital!
In Oct 2008, Ni Luh Ayu Sri Martini a young girl with giant nevi deformities had surgery thanks to the BIMC Hospital team which provided this service free of charge as part of BIMC Hospital's anniversary. (see photo above)
Yayasan Senyum Bali is very pleased to enter a partnership with the Hospital and we look forward to an on going relationship with BIMC well into the future.

Saadah - Before (left) and post surgery (right)
Return home with a smile
Our patient Saadah who departed in October for her surgery in Adelaide returned home in January with her face transfomed, although still quite swollen from the operation. Her time in Adelaide has not only transformed how she looks but it has also helped to install much self confidence in her personality. Her operation by Professor David and his team was funded courtesy of the South Australian Government. Saadah will now take it easy for the next few months to allow the swelling on her face to subside. We wish her the best of luck and hope to see her again at the Professor David clinic follow up for Adelaide patients.

Clinic for Cranio-Facial Patients
Working with Dr Asmarajaya and the team from Sanglah Hospital, Professor David and his staff from the Australian Cranio Facial Unit (ACFU) in Adelaide, Australia assessed thirty six patients with cranio-facial deformities on the 3rd November 2008 at Sanglah Hospital. These patients came from Bali and Lombok and were looked after at the Smile House by our staff.
Professor David and his team also conducted check-ups for eight 'Adelaide returnee' patients as part of the Yayasan Senyum Bali continuing monitoring program. This visit of Professor David was a continuous program for training and skills sharing with local medical teams. The clinic was also an opportunity to assess and set up schedules for new patients and to review past patients which is important for ongoing patient care.

Cleft Awareness at RSUP Sanglah
In November 2008, RSUP Sanglah Denpasar held a cleft awareness program which was organized by Dr Anik Sandy and her medical team.
Yayasan Senyum Bali staff were pleased to participate in this event which was thought to be a very worthwhile exercise. This event gave our staff the opportunity to learn more about Cleft Patients and their abnormalities and it also helped strengthen our good working relationship with the staff at RSUP Sanglah.

Donors, Volunteers and Staff at the opening of our new Smile House
Open House - New Smile House
Our Smile House on Jl.Nusa Penida No.4a accommodated Yayasan Senyum Bali patients and staff for almost two years but the time had come to move to a larger premises.
In late December 2008 we moved to Jl. Satelit No.56 Sanglah Denpasar to larger premises with more bedrooms and two bathrooms/toilets to accommodate our patient’s needs. The premises also have larger office space to accommodate our staff but more importantly the new Smile House has improved ventilated and is a more hygienic setting for our patients. An open house was held on 12 Dec 2008. Donors, Volunteers and Staff were invited and about 20 people attended.
At the beginning of January 2009, the first eight patients and their escorts occupied the house. It was good to see that they didn’t have to queue up to use the bathroom/toilet like they did in our previous Smile House.

Mary Northmore with Brian and Leanne Andrews
Generous Donations
November was a busy month for Yayasan Senyum Bali. Apart from organising the clinic for patients assessments, we were also visited by some very generous people. Among them, Brian and Leanne Andrews and their friends from Victoria, Australia who not only helped one of our patients financially to have surgery in Adelaide in August but also made a very generous donation to Yayasan Senyum Bali. Their donation will enable many people with craniofacial abnormalities to receive operations. (See Photo right)

Open House - New Smile House
During December, Yayasan Senyum Bali (YSB) was invited to participate in a school fete at Sekolah Lentera Kasih (SLK) Kerobokan. We were also informed by the school principal that all proceeds would be donated to Yayasan Senyum Bali. This was a very generous offer and was gratefully received by our founder and Chairperson Mary Northmore. (Photo left-YSB Chairperson receiving donation from SLK Principal)
We would like to wish all our donors a happy and prosperous New Year and thank you all for your generous support in 2008
