The Last Three Months...

In March and April, we had the happy return of I Nyoman Kanca and Ni Kadek Astiti from Adelaide - see page two.

A regular clinic for craniofacial patients was held by Prof.David in collaboration with Surgeons of RSUP Sanglah in March - see below.

A 2nd Singaraja Operations Project in April was made possible by a generous grant from Rotary Club of Seminyak (photo right) - see donor section

Patients Return from Adelaide

I Nyoman Kanca and Ni Kadek Astiti were both diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis and were both referred to Yayasan Senyum by Rotaract Ubud. They have had operations in Adelaide under the care of Professor David and a team of craniofacial specialists from the Australian Cranio-Facial Unit in Adelaide.

Kanca departed in January 2008 followed by Astiti in February 2008. It was a great advantage that they were both in Adelaide at the same time as they could give each other moral support.

Astiti underwent a surgery to debulk the large right facial neurofibra and reconstruct the right orbital plus one graft right illiac crest. Kanca underwent debulking of large left facial neurofibra. Kanca returned home in March. He was then seen again by Prof.David during his March clinic (see below) for check up at RSUP Sanglah. He is now a more confident man after the operation.

Not long after Kanca's return, we also had the return of Astiti in April 2008. Both Kanca and Astiti will need approximately six months to recover and for their swelling to go down.

Forty Craniofacial Patients...

Forty patients attended Prof David David's clinic at Sanglah Hospital on the 10th of March. Patients came from Bali, Lombok, and Sumba. Check-ups were held for seven 'Adelaide returnee' patients as part of the continuing monitoring programme.

Working with Dr Asmarajaya and other local surgeons, Prof David performed two craniofacial operations for our patients from Bali and Lombok. 4 new patients with serious craniofacial problems not easily treated locally were identified and will receive operations in Adelaide.

During his visit in March Prof. David also gave nasendoscopy training for the staff/speech therapists at Sanglah Hospital. This training is useful in the treatment of patients with cleft palate. He also gave a lecture on cleft lip and palate for medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University Denpasar.

Prof.David is holding a Bali clinic again in November 2008.

Singaraja Operation Project-2

On the 26th and 27th of April 2008 eleven cleft operations were performed at Parama Sidhi Hospital Singaraja. This is a continuation of the first project were made possible by good collaboration between Rotary Club of Seminyak, Bali Cleft Lip and Palate Center RSUP Sanglah, Parama Sidhi Hospital and Yayasan Senyum.

Dr AA Asmarajaya and his medical team from BLCP (Bali Cleft Lip and Palate Center) RSUP Sanglah travelled to Singaraja to treat these 11 cleft patients who were all from the Singaraja area and found by Yayasan Senyum Outreach worker, Pak Gede Roby.

There is a great advantage for patients having these operations at Singaraja, however, being able to have operations close to home, and we feel most families would agree that this is a better arrangement than travelling to Denpasar. A second advantage is that it overcomes the problem of long waiting lists at RSUP Sanglah,Denpasar.

On behalf of all those concerned, Yayasan Senyum wish to thank the Rotary Club of Seminyak for the funding of these operations in Singaraja. We expect to have sufficient patients for further operations at Singaraja in the not too distant future.
