Patients Return From & Departed to Adelaide

In October 2007 one of our patients, Rohmawati and her father Bapak Herni finally departed to Adelaide for operation after a long delay which caused by her medical condition which did not support her to travel. After two months treatment in Adelaide Australian Craniofacial unit, she arrived in Bali in December 2007, before she return home to Lombok she was staying at Rumah Senyum.

Rohmawati is a 15 year old from Lombok, who has Tessier Cleft and duplication of her maxilla associated with macrostomia. Courtesy of the Government of South Australian she received treatments from a team of experts. Her treatment included excision of the duplicate maxilla, illiac bone graft, closure of macrostomia and multiple dental exctractions.
She will however need further treatments and orthodontic care. She has now has full confidence going anywhere without covering her face.

Following Rohmawati’e return from Adelaide in the beginning of year 2008, we have also two other patients who are reffered by Rotaract-Ubud, I Nyoman Kanca and Ni Kadek Astiti has departed for Adelaide for operations - More on them next issue.

A visit to the Qantas Office in Jakarta

Bob Everest (Qantas), with Mary Northmore.

Yayasan Senyum (YS) is especially delighted to continue being in a partnership with Qantas Airlines for helping craniofacial patients who are going to Adelaide for surgeries.
For the period of March 2007-March 2008, Qantas has assisted eight patients with free airline tickets Denpasar to Adelaide and return. Up to February 2008 Yayasan Senyum patients has used up those tickets.

Having assistance from Qantas means anytime YS needs to send patients to Adelaide particulary the one with such a short notice and urgent case,we know we will get a seat and the patients will get their treatment accordingly. This also means Yayasan Senyum no need to find finance for ticket from other donors. YS will only need to find fund for the contribution fee we made under this scheme, visa and organizing travel documents.

Mary Northmore (Founder & Chairperson of YS) recently, visited Qantas office in Jakarta and met by Bob Everest (Qantas Manager Indonesia) and Bernadette Muljohardjo to discuss the continuation of YS and Qantas partnership for the next period. We are very optimistic that Qantas will continue to be our partner and support our program for these unfortunate people with craniofacial disabilities.

    Ameloblastoma

    A patient affected by ameloblastoma
    A patient affected by ameloblastoma

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive benign tumor. It is a common neoplasm affecting the jaws, yet only account for one percent of all oral (mandible and maxilla) tumors. The mandible is effected four times more frequently than the maxilla. Ameloblastomas are infamous for their invasive growth and their tendency to recur.

The diagnosis of ameloblastoma can not be made by radiographic means alone. There are, however, several radiographic features which make one suspicious of the diagnosis.

Typically, early symptoms are absent and are seldom diagnosed in the early stages of development. The usual clinical presentation of this tumor is that of a slowly growing, asymptomatic intraoral swelling. Commonly patients seek for medical advice when they experience pain, numbness, toothache, mobile teeth, ill fitting dentures, malocclusion, ulcerations, draining sinuses, nasal obstruction, or even epistaxis.
